Hi everyone!
Welcome to Episode 2 of this season, The Year of Expansive Thinking.
I’m dedicating an entire season to talk about how to not only dream up big things in our work lives, but also how to execute these ideas.
In order for us to do anything – especially anything that feels big – we have to be in the right headspace. That’s what the first few episodes of this series will touch on: the mindset we need to take big swings.
One of the most prominent voices that will show up first when you’re dreaming up something big is the little gremlin that’s like “but what if you fail?” That gremlin instills a sense of fear. It feels inevitable, in a way. I’ve been running my business for a decade now, and I remember that gremlin on my shoulder when I told my PhD adviser that I didn’t want to be an academic. I remember that gremlin on my shoulder when I moved across the world three times in half a calendar year. That silly little guy showed up every time I pitched a big, involved journalism project
I asked Nicole Tsong to come on the show for this episode because she’s taken those big swings herself.
She left a career in journalism to become a yoga teacher, and then she left yoga to become a coach and entrepreneur. I think there’s a lot to learn from someone who’s lived so many lives and careers in a relatively short span of time.
Now, she is the owner of Nicole Tsong Coaching and the School of Self-Worth podcast. Through her work, she helps Asian-American women leaders release the pressure valve, supercharge their self worth and master intuitive decision-making.
An award winning-journalist, she reached hundreds of thousands of readers as the former Fit for Life columnist for The Seattle Times. For three years, she taught yoga at the White House Easter Egg Roll during the Obama administration.
In this episode, we talk about
How career growth doesn’t have to be linear
How to feel grounded before making a big decision
How to think about making a decision as an experiment
You can find the episode wherever you podcast!

EVENTS, WORKSHOPS, ETC:
March 27: How to integrate lead gen into your business with Lex Roman
Generating leads is just another fancy way to say ‘generate business.’ And all freelancers need to understand how they do this. If this term feels way too corporate, Lex Roman is going to break it down so you’ll feel inspired to leverage it in your own creative business. (And, yes, every single one of us needs a lead generation engine if we run a business) Tickets still available here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/796358629097?aff=oddtdtcreator and sales will close *tomorrow*, 3/26 at 12pm Pacific!
April: The Fresh Paint Clinic!
Next month, I’ll be running my signature course that helps freelancers create a webpage portfolio that they’re proud to show off. It will be held over the course of three weeks. Previous attendees have described this workshop as incredibly helpful in lighting a fire under their ass to get a portfolio up and running. It’s also helped them to think deeply about what they want to be known for! Sign up today! Spots are limited: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-fresh-paint-clinic-tickets-846049696417
May 14: Create a marketing plan that doesn’t suck with Austin L. Church
In this economy, we need to be marketing every day to make sure the well of work doesn’t run dry. But how do we create a plan that will yield results and doesn’t involve shouting into the void on social media, or act in ways that feel inauthentic to us? Austin L. Church, freelance and marketing extraordinaire, will be teaching a miniature version of his signature course, Morning Marketing Habit, so you walk away with a weekly plan of how to best market your business. Spots are limited for this one, too: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/845091169437?aff=oddtdtcreator
