Hi everyone!
A very overdone and true statement about freelancing is: “You’re running a business!”
(Although… if you’re listening and subscribed to The Writers’ Co-op, you probably know that by now.)
Businesses of all sizes have income targets, goals, creative direction—and even business plans!
This “corporate speak” can feel, well, corporate. But some of those terms, and ways of doing things, and problem solving in the corporate world can also be applied to running a freelance business.
To get more specific, we dig into how to check in with your business on a regular basis on this episode of The Writers’ Co-op – the same way that any company performs quarterly or annual reviews.
Since I have no experience working for corporations, I sought out someone who did.
My co-host this week is Melody Burdette. Melody is a freelance content strategist and copywriter based out of Billie, her Ford Transit. (Yes, that’s a van.) She’s spent the early part of her career working in editorial and e-commerce, and more recently in startups that you may have heard of – like Gusto and Collective Health – as a content strategist and copywriter.
I’ve known Melody for over a decade, and when I saw her Instagram story last year about a retreat she planned for herself, I knew she’d be a great co-host for this show.
We talk about how you can set up your own business retreats. (Join TWC as an All-Access patron and get a worksheet to help plan what you want it to look like!) One thing I love about my conversation with Melody is that sometimes, a retreat isn’t just for your business – it can also be for your life. It’s a great opportunity to sit still, reflect, and get clarity on where you’d like to go next.
During our episode, Mel hinted that she might be building a retreat! In fact, she’s releasing a course to help folks design their years on their own schedule. It’s called “The Play Big Playbook” – you can learn more about it by following @PlayBigPlayBook on Instagram, or Mel on @melskyburd.
And, if this episode is prompting questions about your own business goals going forward, I welcome you to join The Writers’ Co-op’s annual business refresh. Conveniently, I’m running a flash sale on it today through Wednesday, Oct 25! FLASHREFRESH gets you $25 off.
Come online and talk to me about the big plans you have for the year ahead and reflect on all the amazing work you’ve done this year. Join the audit from somewhere in the woods or the comfort of your home! There are two dates in November (Nov. 15, or Nov. 29) – learn more and register here,
Talk to you all soon,
Wudan
