Get After It 011: running a business is a creative task.
After I announced that I’m launching a fact-checking agency a few weeks ago, I feel like I’m at the starting line again.
It was ten years ago that I launched my first business — my editorial business. But even then, I didn’t do it with intention. I didn’t make a business plan or think about workflows or standard operating procedures. I kind of just went forth with it.
Since then, I’ve started a second business and transitioned into full ownership of it. I’ve coached hundreds of other freelancers on how to build sustainable businesses. I’ve interviewed dozens of guests on The Writers’ Co-op who have built businesses that suited them.
Now it’s my turn to do it again.
Instead of feeling overwhelmed (let’s face it, starting a third business is wild), I feel joyous and playful. I feel like I’m unboxing a Lego set for my birthday, only there are no set instructions. I just get to build however I like. I’m starting to envision the finished product. I’m also thinking about the structure and the foundations of the business.
When we’re in the day to day of operating our own businesses, we may forget that building and running a business is a creative act.
