One small transformative habit
If you’ve been around here a second, you know that I love a good experiment within my freelance business. In the last calendar year, I tried turning down clients who didn’t pay a certain amount per project; I invested a lot of time in building my business website with a specific focus on SEO — and more.
The latest experiment came by earlier this year, when I looked into the work that my colleague and friend, Austin L. Church, preached.
He had this course called “Morning Marketing Habit.”
It found me at a time where I didn’t necessarily need to be marketing; I had enough work throughout the first quarter to keep me *plenty* busy.
But like I said in a recent newsletter, I didn’t learn how to market the proper way. If there’s anything that’s been a big pain point in my own business, it’s absolutely not having a consistent marketing plan.
So, I decided to learn via Austin’s course.
Marketers will always tell you to ‘always be marketing.’ I’ve seen this advice getting trumpeted on social media as well and I’ve always rolled my eyes. But here was a dedicated space to learn, so I did.
What I took away from Austin’s course was that we can all do this thing called ‘marketing’ in really small but meaningful ways. It can be as easy as following up with your leads already in your pipeline. It can be engaging on LinkedIn. Anything that doesn’t make you feel like shit and through ways that have yielded you meaningful results: that’s marketing.
Guess what? Conceptualizing marketing in that way for me actually enabled me to do a little bit of marketing every single day. I was able to see how these ‘small acts of marketing’ I committed was still that — marketing. I didn’t see results immediately, but it adds up over time. And the more you market, the more introductory calls you have. The more you market, the less it stings when one (or a few) clients invariably drop the ball. That’s why this habit of marketing matters: it ultimately puts you in charge of your business, rather than resigning yourself to the freelance ‘feast or famine’ cycle.
Next month, Austin will be teaching a TWC workshop on how you can make a marketing plan that you’ll stick with and doesn’t suck. It’s going to be super interactive, and he will help walk you through coming up with a PLAN that you can take away and immediately implement. We’ll talk through mindset as well as the practicalities of how to get to making marketing a daily habit.
