When I first got into freelancing, all I wanted to do was write.
Along the way, I learned that I had to be my own social media manager, my own bookkeeper/accountant, administrative assistant, legal team, and so much more.
Some of these aspects of freelancing came a little easier than others. (I absolutely love contract law. Don’t ask me why, but I do. So much so that I’ve created an entire course to help you break down tricky legalese!)
But the one aspect that I struggled with for years? Marketing.
For the longest time, freelance journalists seemed to think that being on Twitter was a type of marketing. It took me a long, long time to realize that Twitter isn’t a place for serious buyers to be seeking out my services, and as such, I’ve moved on from that platform to marketing methods that feel far less frenetic (like newsletters!).
Over the years, I’ve come to appreciate that marketing is just a fancy term for ‘drumming up work.’ Sometimes it’s also a fancy term for ‘staying top of mind.’ So, you could pay for Facebook ads, or you could just email people in your personal and professional network for potential gigs.
Ten years after starting my freelance business, and I feel like I’ve finally attended enough webinars out there to separate the signal from the noise.
That’s what I want to bring to you this spring: a no-bullshit approach to thinking about marketing in your freelance business.
I now know that lead generation is integral to running a freelance business, especially to skip the famine parts of the freelance feast-or-famine. I know that it’s critical to have a business website that showcases how you can help others solve problems and your expertise. I know that marketing is a must, and ideally, you’d do a little every day.
If you, like me, have struggled with this particular element of your freelance business, you’ll want to tune in for the following events.
My goal this spring is to give you a masterclass in marketing through this series of events.
And not the type of marketing that you’ll turn up your nose at either. It’s going to be marketing that feels authentic and tailor-made for your needs and personality.
Here’s what’s in store!
