There are very few 'shoulds' in business
And the 'shoulds' that I stand by are really just things you MUST do.
In earlier seasons of The Writers’ Co-op and my own coaching practice, I’ve established that ‘should’ is a rather… dirty word. “Should is could, but topped off with a nice coating of shame.” The things we should do are things that we feel societally pressured to do, in one way, shape, or form. In my coaching practice, I ask my clients: toss out what you believe you need to do. What do you want to do? How do you want to do things differently?
Unfortunately, there are things that we really need to do as a freelance business owners. (But I wouldn’t say you SHOULD do these things. Rather, you must!) Here’s a short list:
Create a business plan. You can’t steer a ship without an agenda. You could, but it might veer extremely off course. Writing up a business plan helps you stay on track.
Pay your taxes. Self explanatory 😅. Sure, we are societally pressured to pay our taxes, but… just pay your taxes, ok?
Establish boundaries. So you’re working on your own terms to live the life you want.
Audit your business. Make sure you stay on track.
