Last month, I released an interview with Karen Given about setting yourself up well for freelancing while you’re still in a full-time job, and one thing she said during that episode still sticks with me.
When she was still at her full-time job, she decided on what she wanted to be known for. It wasn’t sports, or trends in her industry (podcasts and public radio) — but rather, as she put it, “I wanted to become a thought leader in how to tell stories.”
So, she started a newsletter. Even though Karen claims she doesn’t have time for it, her subscribers — who sometimes end up hiring her for work — often reference it in conversation.
The more we work, the more we become an expert in… something. That expertise can be beneficial knowledge to someone else. I’m here to tell you that you’re an expert in something — yep, kick that imposter syndrome to the curb — and maybe that can help others. Maybe you can distribute that knowledge in the form of a newsletter.
Join us this Thursday, June 8 as we discuss best practices for building audience and monetizing a newsletter with Chris La Tray and Melinda Wenner Moyer, two independent writers who have done precisely this! Tickets are still on sale — get them here! — and if you want to nab ‘em at a discount, you can join as a Patreon member to get 30% off.
See you there!
