If you’ve been around the TWC sphere for more than a second, you probably noticed that I’ve started changing up my language about how I talk about the business of freelancing lately.
Potential clients —> leads.
Signing a contract —> sales.
Language matters. Even the subtle difference between calling ourselves ‘freelancers’ and ‘small business owners’ matters because of what we associate with each.
If I’m looking up a business, the first thing I’ll do is Google them. If it’s a restaurant, hair salon, body work studio, etc., I’ll want to make sure they’re rated on Google Maps, and that they have a business website. I’d want to make sure their previous customers were happy, and that they are offering the services I’m looking for.
The exact same goes for what we do.
Subject matter experts, clients, and others who I email with are always clicking on my webpage, linked in my email signature. They’re probably asking the same questions that I do when I’m looking up a small business: Who is this Wudan person? Why should I trust her for this job?
If you don’t already have a business website, you need to build one.
If you haven’t updated your business website so you’re best attracting your clients, it’s time to update it.
We rely on customers to find us in order to sustain our business, so our outward presentation absolutely matters.
That’s why I’m so passionate about teaching THE FRESH PAINT CLINIC, which will run this month, starting April 10th. Over the course of three weeks, I’ll teach you what makes a stellar business website, how to best talk about yourself and what you can offer customers, and beyond. It’s a marketing, sales, and SEO masterclass all in one. This is meant for freelancers who want to update their page, or those who want to create one anew. Plus, you’ll get personalized feedback from me on how to make your business website shine.
